Make no mistake, you are under a lot of physical and mental stress when faced with a sports injury. Most of the healing process is up to you after the doctors put everything back in place. If you have to rest, then simply do that. Doing some light exercises if it’s safe to do so with help with the mental part of your recovery. By giving your body the time it needs to recover, you will make the most of the healing process.
Foot injuries can be one of the worst for a lot of reasons and the recovery period often lasts a long time. Some of the most common are bruises to the heel, stress fractures and ligament strains. There’s also the common injury of a sprained or twisted ankle, that usually takes many years to heal. The important point to remember with foot injuries is to stay off that hurt foot.
Your feet take all of your weight which is why it’s so important to not antagonize it further. Sometimes it will be very tempting to test your foot to see how well it’s healing. However it’s certainly not recommended to do this as it’s very easy to injure yourself even more, making things take longer.
Good sports doctors will try to heal an injury without being too obvious. For example, unless the situation warrants more serious treatment, ice and rest are prescribed to reduce swelling. Anti-inflammatory and pain medicines may be prescribed if needed. Other more appropriate treatments may be suggested to you if your injury is quite serious. Getting rest and being sedentary during the first stages of a sports injury make it quite hard. You must show restraint when resting because you don’t want to cause further injuries whilst you’re recuperating.
As with anything else in life, doing something safely has to do with proper precautions, especially when you are trying to heal. Those that head back to the field need to be careful that they do not injure themselves by playing too hard. As you probably did before, make sure you focus upon stretching your tendons, muscles, and every other part of your body before playing each day. This is all necessary to make sure your body regains the strength that it lost and flexibility that you once had before you stopped playing. Most of the time people will get back to their old selves physically, but it will take a little bit of time to get there. And finally, protective gear is a must, especially if you are healing and trying to get back in shape.
There are lots of factors involved when dealing with an injury from sports. A very common mistake many people make is trying to hurry up the time it takes to heal, which isn’t a good idea. Allowing your body to recover fully is better than fighting it as all that’ll happen is you get stressed out.
